More than a hundred people take part in the fourth edition of "La Festa de la Platja", the “beach party” organised by Estrella Damm and the CRAM Foundation
Volunteers took part in activities to clean up microplastics from the sand on the beach of El Prat de Llobregat and raise environmental awareness, and had the opportunity to enjoy a concert by the Barcelona band River Omelet
El Prat de Llobregat beach has been, for yet another year, the setting for "La Festa de la Platja", (“beach party”) initiative organised by Estrella Damm and the CRAM Foundation, now in its fourth edition. The event brought together more than a hundred volunteers in a day that combined environmental action, awareness-raising and fun.
The day began with one of the most eagerly awaited moments: the return to the sea of Lemon, a 24-kilo Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) that had been accidentally caught up in a trawling net. This specimen, which had suffered from a gaseous embolism and a wound on the lower part of its shell, had been recovering for weeks at the CRAM facilities. The release, to the great joy and excitement of the participants, epitomised the work the Foundation has been doing over the past 25 years in the rescue and recovery of marine species.
The participants then took part in a team activity to collect microplastics and waste from the beach. This activity, which combines fun and awareness-raising, showed the real impact that these pollutants have on the Mediterranean and highlighted the importance of reducing the use of plastic in everyday life. At the same time, awareness-raising workshops and educational spaces were organised for young and old to learn about good sustainability practices.
The day was topped off by music, with a concert by the Barcelona band River Omelet. The folk trio played their warm, friendly repertoire that rounded off a day marked by citizen involvement and a commitment to nature.
According to Alba Linares, Head of Sustainability and ESG at Damm, "initiatives like these allow us to forge ties with society and highlight the need to preserve the Mediterranean's biodiversity. Only by joining forces can we keep our seas alive and healthy.”
Montse Pal, head of Communications at the CRAM Foundation, stressed that "the growing participation of each edition is a sign that environmental awareness is making progress. The Festa de la Platja helps us to bring our work closer to the public and involve them directly in protecting the sea."
