The CRAM Foundation and Damm release August the sea turtle onto the beach in Prat de Llobregat
The loggerhead turtle, named in tribute to company founder August Kuentzmann Damm, has returned to its natural habitat after recovering for six months at the facilities of the CRAM Foundation
As part of their commitment to fostering care for our seas and oceans, Damm and the Foundation for the Conservation and Rehabilitation of Marine Animals (CRAM) have released August the sea turtle, a specimen sponsored by the company that’s returned to the Mediterranean after successfully completing its recovery process at the Foundation’s facilities, onto the beach in Prat de Llobregat.
Its release has taken place in a very special year for Damm, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary. The turtle has therefore been named August, in tribute to August Kuentzmann Damm, who founded the company in 1876.
It was accidentally captured on 29 December 2025 by a fishing boat, which alerted the CRAM’s Clinic and Rescue team. Following its arrival at the centre, the initial diagnostic tests confirmed that the turtle was suffering from pneumonia, had a small hook lodged in its oesophagus and a fracture in the lower part of its beak and was displaying signs of dehydration. Since then, the turtle has remained under veterinary monitoring at the CRAM’s facilities, where it has undergone a recovery process to meet the conditions required for it to return to its natural habitat. The specimen has been equipped with a satellite tracking device to oversee its evolution after its release.
Once again, its recovery highlights the vulnerability of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), a species threatened by accidental fishing, pollution, climate change and human pressure along the coastline. In this regard, each specimen that returns to the sea provides a new opportunity to conserve the species and protect the balance of the marine ecosystems.
The release comes in the wake of the work performed by Damm with the CRAM Foundation over the last five years to contribute to the recovery of sea turtles and their reintroduction into the Mediterranean. In the last year on record, the company supported the recovery and release of the turtles called Free, reintroduced on the occasion of World Ocean Day, and Estrella Damm, liberated as part of World Beach Day and the Festa de la Plaja (Beach Festival).
Damm’s partnership with the CRAM Foundation is also channelled through the volunteer plan known as #LIVE TO BE PART OF THE CHANGE, by means of which the company’s employees take part in environmental awareness initiatives, workshops on the conservation of the marine environment and campaigns to clear waste from beaches.
